Farmers
The baby birds have hatched and are loud next to my back door. Each time I peep, their beaks are wide open and wanting food. They are keeping their mother very busy. Imagine all of that hunting and watching and caring for them and then they fly away…
I went to the Farmer’s Market yesterday. I had a twenty dollar bill in my pocket and I came home with ruby red grapefruit, snap beans, new potatoes, red cabbage, giant orange carrots, and peaches. If I would have gotten there earlier, I would have had cucumbers. There are berries and Swiss chard and jars of jam and aprons and baby clothes and fresh eggs and a collection of people that are farmers, cultivators of the “good earth” sustaining our bodies. We should put much value in farmers and teachers and policeman and caregivers. Rappers and actors and pro athletes will not sustain our bodies and minds. Opps, didn’t mean to get on a soap box, but it is hard not to notice how much of society holds these professions in reverence. I saw real brilliance this morning on the Teche; real people who work hard with their hands and from their hearts and their work will feed my family and help to keep us
healthy.
Till next time,
