Just a quick note on something I read in MENSHEALTH that I found interesting:

·  In 1957, a serving of popcorn at the drive-in was 3 cups. Today a medium-size popcorn at the multiplex is 16 cups.

·  In 1957, 1 ounce of cooked ground beef made up your typical hamburger. Today the average hamburger is 6 ounces.

·  Muffins were tiny in 1957, about 1 1/2 ounces. Now they typically weigh in at 8 ounces and pack 400 calories.

·  A large soda in 1957 measured 8 fluid ounces compared with 32 ounces in 1997, or often 64 ounces today

Potatoes

 

I was where I was supposed to be today. A quick visit with my neighbor – a stroll through her garden and a bit of catch up conversation – and a good while in my garden. I feel tired from the digging and replenished from the job, planting potatoes. So basic, so wonderful. Potatoes, the spud of life, a giver of good health - one medium potato has almost three times more potassium than one medium orange. The soil was loose like it should be for the tubers to grow and reach out and I was fingers to face with fat earthworms and winter bugs that were yawning and stretching in the near spring sun - it was rich in compost (I have chickens…). I think ahead of a day in early June when I will spend the morning in my garden and dig potatoes and feel so good once again about what I did today and then more happiness from this day when we have fresh, organic potatoes for supper. Anyway, today was a happy, satisfying day for me; a visit to my neighbor’s beautiful garden and planting potatoes in mine.
